Key Points

Why is your in-hand salary lower than your CTC?

  • CTC is the total a company spends on you in a year, not what reaches your bank account.
  • It can include employer PF, gratuity, insurance and variable pay.
  • In-hand salary is what's left each month after your own deductions.
  • Before you accept an offer, ask for your monthly in-hand amount and your variable pay.

CTC or In-Hand Salary: Why a ₹6 LPA Offer Isn't ₹50,000 a Month

You get your first offer: ₹6 LPA.

You open the calculator. ₹6,00,000 ÷ 12 = ₹50,000 a month. You start planning the rent, the phone and maybe something for your parents.

Then the first salary comes, and it's closer to ₹40,000.

Nobody cheated you. You just read CTC as salary.

What Is CTC?

CTC means Cost to Company. It's the total amount a company spends on you in a year. Some of it never comes to you monthly, and some of it may not come to you at all for years.

Where Does the Money Go?

Here's a simple example of a ₹6 LPA offer. Every company structures this differently, so these numbers are only an illustration.
Part of CTCPer year
Total CTC₹6,00,000
Employer's PF contributionMinus ₹36,000
Gratuity (set aside by the company)Minus ₹14,400
Insurance and other benefitsMinus ₹9,600
Variable pay (if you get it)Minus ₹30,000
Fixed yearly salary₹5,10,000
That's ₹42,500 a month. But you still have deductions from your side:
MonthlyAmount
Gross monthly salary₹42,500
Your own PF contributionMinus ₹3,000
Professional tax (depends on state)Minus ₹200
In-hand salary₹39,300
So your ₹50,000 became about ₹39,300.

What Do These Terms Mean?

PF (Provident Fund): Money saved for your future. You and your employer each contribute 12% of your wages. The mandatory base is a wage ceiling of ₹15,000 a month, which means ₹1,800 from each side. Some companies calculate PF on a higher amount, as in the example above. So PF isn't lost money. It's your savings, but you can't spend it today.

Gratuity: An amount the company sets aside for you. Regular employees get it only after 5 years of continuous service, so don't count it as salary. Fixed-term employees qualify after 1 year.

Variable pay: It depends on your performance or the company's results. It may be paid later, and it may not be paid in full.

Income tax: At this salary, you may pay none. Under the new tax regime for FY 2026-27, salaried people generally pay no tax up to about ₹12.75 lakh a year. But higher offers will have tax deducted, so your in-hand falls further.

5 Questions to Ask Before Accepting

Don't say: "What's my package?"
Say: "What will be my monthly in-hand salary after all deductions?"

Then ask:
  1. How much of the CTC is fixed, and how much is variable?
  2. When is the variable pay given, and how is it decided?
  3. Is PF calculated on my actual basic pay or on the ₹15,000 ceiling?
  4. Does the CTC include a joining bonus or a one-time amount? Will it have to be returned if I leave early?
  5. Which other benefits are counted inside the CTC?
These questions don't make you look greedy. They make you look like someone who reads before signing.

And when you compare two offers, don't compare CTC. Compare fixed salary and in-hand.

CTC is the number that sounds good.

In-hand is the number that pays your rent.
