What I Noticed About People Who Keep Winning
Have you noticed that some people seem to succeed at almost everything they do?We often call them lucky. Some say they are born with a Midas touch. Others say they are God's favourite.
MS Dhoni has heard all these things. India won the T20 World Cup in 2007, the World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013 under his captaincy. And people kept calling him lucky.
But I think there is much more to it than luck.
I have followed the lives of several successful people. I have read about them, watched their journeys and tried to understand what makes them different. I noticed a few things that kept coming up.
They Look at Failure Differently
For most of us, failure is painful. We start questioning ourselves. Am I good enough? Do I have what it takes? But successful people seem to look at failure differently. They try to understand what went wrong and what they can do better next time.
Psychologist Carol Dweck calls this a growth mindset. It simply means believing that you can improve your abilities through learning, practice and effort.
I have noticed that people who think this way don't remain stuck for too long. They learn from mistakes, try again and are willing to change their approach.
Over time, this makes a big difference.
They Have Fear, But They Don't Let It Stop Them
We often imagine that successful people are fearless. I don't think that is true. They have doubts. They get nervous. They worry about things going wrong, just like the rest of us.
The difference is that they don't allow fear to make every decision for them.
Psychologist Albert Bandura called this self-efficacy. In simple words, it means believing that you can handle a difficult situation and find a way forward.
They are not fearless. They simply have enough faith in themselves to take the next step.
They Notice Things Others Miss
Some people seem to read situations better than others. They notice opportunities, understand people's behaviour and recognise patterns before everyone else does.Think about Dhoni giving the last over of the 2007 T20 World Cup final to Joginder Sharma. Or promoting himself up the batting order in the 2011 World Cup final, where he scored an unbeaten 91.
To someone watching from outside, these decisions may look like lucky guesses.
But I believe they came from years of understanding the game, observing players and reading situations.
What looks like a lucky decision to us may actually be the result of experience and preparation.
We Only See Their Success, Not Their Struggles
This is something we often forget. We see the trophies, awards, money and recognition. We rarely see the failures, rejected ideas, difficult decisions and sleepless nights that came before them.
Remember, India was knocked out in the first round of the 2007 ODI World Cup, with Dhoni in the team. Just a few months later, he was leading India to victory in the T20 World Cup.
The same person. The same sport. A very different result.
Successful people fail too. The difference is often in how they respond to failure.
There Is No Magic Formula
After following so many successful people, I haven't found any superhuman quality that separates them from everyone else. What I have noticed is much simpler.
They learn from their mistakes. They adapt when situations change. They manage their emotions. They keep working even when results are not coming.
None of these things sounds extraordinary on its own.
But when you keep doing them for years, the results can be extraordinary.
People call it luck because they see the result. I have learned to look at everything that happened before it.
