Define DNS

The DNS translates Internet domain and host names to IP addresses. DNS automatically converts the names we type in our Web browser address bar to the IP addresses of Web servers hosting those sites. DNS implements a distributed database to store this name and address information for all public hosts on the Internet.

DNS: DNS is the Domain Name System which converts the IP addresses into alphabetical order Name and Alphabetical Order to IP addressing (vice Versa). OR, The DNS Is the name in the Internet which maps the host names into IP addresses and other record values.

examples of DNS: www.cisco.com ; www.google.com.

We can find the IP address of the above urls or Domains by traceroute them.

Port no: 53.

On cisco routrs we use the following command to issue the domain name in Global configuration mode:


# ip domain-name
