What is VLSM, Variable length subnet masking?

- VLSM is a means of allocating IP addressing resources to subnets according to their individual need rather than some general network-wide rule.
- It allows the network engineer to divide the IP address space in a hierarchy of subnets of different sizes which will make it possible to create a subnet with different host count without wasting a large number of addresses.
