Gears having high contact ratio have reduced noise levels. Gear designer can control parameters like contact ratio without affecting overall configuration of gear system.

Crossed helical gears can transmit both power and motion, but due to point contact between two meshing teeth crossed helical gears are not preferred for power transmission and are only used for motion transmission.

Thrust load or axial trust acting on helical gears pushes the shaft laterally, and the bearings carrying the shaft are damaged if they are not designed to support the load. Helical gears are subjected to axial thrust due to gradient of teeth and pressure applied, however this limitation of helical gears can be eradicated by using thrust bearings and specialized lubricants.
