Gears are inspected by using two different methods which include :

    1) Analytical checking
    2) Functional checking

    1) Analytical checking:

    - This method of checking involves actual measurement of tooth elements with the help of measuring instruments.

    - This method is used to measure or check gear tooth thickness, pitch, tooth profile or pitch diameter and also indicates error obtained.

    2) Functional checking:

    - The purpose of functional checking is to determine noise level, vibrations, etc. This checking indicates behavior of gears but does give any value of errors.

    - Hence, functional checking needs to be followed by analytical checking to identify errors.
