Article 18(1) of the Indian Constitution prohibits the conferment of 'titles' by the State with the exception of military and academic distinctions. The recipients of Bharat Ratna and Padma awards are forbidden constitutionally to use the name of the award as title in suffix or prefix to the recipient's name.
