The Protocol was adopted on 29 January, 2000. India has acceded the Biosafety Protocol on 17 January 2003. The Protocol has come into force on 11 September 2003. As of date, 157 countries are parties to the Protocol.
The main objective of the protocol is to contribute to ensuring an adequate level of production in the field of the safe transfer, handling of LMOs resulting from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effect on the conservation an d sustainable use of biological diversity taking into account risk to human health.
