    - Even though the casting process is cheapest and easiest way to manufacture products, it also has some defects.

    - These defects in castings occur due to certain methods in casting processes.

    - The factors which are responsible for these defects are as follows:

    1. Selection of material for mould and core
    2. Design of casting
    3. Design of pattern equipment
    4. Gating and risering
    5. Moulding and core making equipment
    6. Melting and pouring

    and so on.

    - One of the defects cause in casting is blow holes. They appear as cavities in casting

    - Blow holes in casting are caused by excessive moisture, low permeability, excessive grains or improper venting.

    - The cavities which are visible on the upper surface of the casting are called as open holes and the cavities which are concealed in casting and are not visible from outside are called as blow holes
