Momentum in tangential direction of the rotor is produced by the product of mass flow rate and tangential component of velocity of fluid.

The moment of momentum about the axis of rotor gives rise to angular moment producing torque. This torque causes the rotor to rotate, and this further produces power.

Therefore, tangential component of velocity (Vw) is responsible for transmission of power.
