    The centrifugal pumps are classified on the basis of their type of casing are as follows:

    1. Volute pump or constant velocity pump

    2. Vortex or variable velocity pump

    3. Diffuser or turbine pump


    - The cross section of volute pump is so designed to give constant velocity in the volute of spiral shape. The loss of energy is considerably reduced due to this volute casing.

    - The drawback of volute pump is reduced by using vortex pump. The vortex pump has relatively larger overall diameter as compared to volute pump.

    - The volute pumps and vortex volute pumps are single stage pumps with horizontal shaft.
