Depending upon the inlet condition of the flow into the passage of varying cross-section the velocity of the fluid either increases or decreases.

A passage of uniformly varying cross-section in which the kinetic energy of fluid increases at the expense of its pressure energy is called as nozzle. In case of steam, the nozzle in which the kinetic energy of the steam increases at the expense of its pressure energy is called as steam nozzle.

The flow of fluid takes place at high speeds and the only disturbance is the area change. In the absence of friction losses without any external work transfers, the process is essentially adiabatic and isentropic.
