The mathematical technique which deals with the dimensions of physical quantities in a phenomenon is called as dimensional analysis.

In dimensional analysis, it is assumed that the phenomenon can be expressed by a dimensionally homogeneous equation with certain variables.

Some problems in fluid mechanics are difficult to solve due to their complexity. The solutions of these problems which are very complex in nature can considerably be simplified by using dimensional analysis.

Advantages of dimensional analysis are as follows:

    1. The functional relationship between dependent and non-dependent variables can be expressed into dimensionless terms by dimensional analysis

    2. In model testing, it reduces the number of variables into three numbers

    3. It is used to change the theoretical equation into dimensionless form

    4. It helps to convert the units of quantities from one system to another system
