    Ultrasonic test uses sound waves of high frequency to detect discontinuities. This method is used to detect flaws on the surface and also deep inside the component. The waves travel in straight line and are reflected from metal gas interface or discontinuities in their patch.

    Transducer is used generate high frequency sound waves. Transducer converts one form of energy into another. Ultrasonic waves traveling in a straight line are reflected by flaws present in their path. Pulse-echo method and through transmission methods are generally used.

    This method cannot be used to scan irregular or complicated shapes. The sound waves generated are not hazardous to health. Ultrasonic test equipment is portable and handy. It can be used for all metals. This method is sensitive and reliable. This method is used to detect cracks and can be used to measure coating thickness. This method is also used to measure corrosion rate.
