In a memorable women’s 10,000 championship, Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana shattered the world record by running 29:17:46 to win the gold medal at the Rio Olympic games.
  • Vivian Cheruiyot won silver in 29:32:53 minutes and bronze was claimed by defending champion Tirunesh Dibaba who closed in 29:42:56.
  • US Olympic Trials champion Molly Huddle broke the American record at 30:13:17, by around 9 seconds.
  • In just her second track 10K, Ayana broke into record books at a timing 42 seconds faster than Junxia’s long standing record.
