    - Bearing is a mechanical element which permits relative motion between two parts carrying load.

    - Bearings are used to support shaft and axles with the frame. The forces acting on shaft and axle are transmitted to the frame or casing by the bearings.

    - The different types of bearings used for this purpose are: Rolling and sliding contact bearings.

    Rolling contact bearings:

    - These bearings are called as anti-friction bearings because low friction is offered by rolling contact bearings. The contacting surfaces have rolling contact between them. These bearings can take radial and axial load.

    - Ball bearings and roller bearings are the two types of rolling contact bearings depending upon the rolling elements.

    - Ball bearings use balls as rolling elements and roller bearings use cylindrical rollers, taper rollers or spherical rollers as rolling elements.

    Sliding contact bearings:

    - These bearings occupy less radial space and are compact.

    - These gears are generally designed to carry radial and axial load.

    - The different types of sliding contact bearings are based on :

    1) Type of load
    2) Type of lubrication
    3) Lubrication mechanism.
