Among the above given turbines, Pelton wheel is an impulse type water turbine. It works on the principle of impulse.

As in the case of impulse turbines, the nozzle in pelton wheel produces high speed jet which strikes on the spoon shaped buckets, also called as impulse blades. These impulse blades are mounted on circumference of a wheel called as runner. As high speed water jet strikes the blades, its direction of velocity changes. The impulse energy by water jet exerted on the bucket and wheel system and runner starts spinning.

In this process, the momentum of water jet is transferred to the wheel and hence to the turbine. Therefore the work is done by the impulse energy on the turbine in pelton wheel.

Pelton wheels have only one turbine stage, because of the use of liquid fluids which are incompressible.
