    - Grinding is classified on the basis of type of surface to be ground as follows:

    1. External cylindrical grinding: It is carried out for grinding a straight of tapered surface on a workpiece. The workpiece is rotated about its own axis.

    2. Internal cylindrical grinding: It is carried out for grinding internal cylindrical holes and tapers.

    3. Surface grinding: It is carried out for grinding flat surface. Workpiece is reciprocated at a constant speed below or on the end face of the grinding wheel

    4. Form grinding: It is carried out for grinding formed surfaces such as in grinding gear teeth, threads, splined shafts, holes, etc. Form grinding is done with the specially shaped grinding wheels.
