Formula for taper angle - Manufacturing Processes - 1

Q.  Assume a machining process of taper turning. In this process, a large diameter of taper is 'D' and it is uniformly decreased to the small diameter of the taper 'd' at the horizontal length of tapered part of workpiece is 'L'. What is the correct formula for half of tapper angle (2α / 2)?

a. α = sin–1 ((D – d) / 2L)
b. α = cos–1 ((D – d) / 2L)
c. α = tan–1 ((D – d) / 2L)
d. α = cot–1 ((D – d) / 2L)

ANSWER: α = tan–1 ((D – d) / 2L)

    Use this simple formula with your simple scientific calculator to find taper angle , just simply punch on to your calculator as written below ( taper divided by 24 equals second function tan);


    TAPER / 24 = 2nd.func.tan
    The answer that you will get is taper angle but if you want to know included angle , multiply the answer with 2.

    - Consider the below diagram,



    - In above diagram,

    D = Large diameter of taper in mm

    L = Length of taper part in mm

    d = Small diameter of taper in mm

    α = Half of the taper angle.

    - The half of the taper angle α is given by,

    α = tan–1 ((D – d) / 2L)
