Guide mechanism consists of guide wheel. Guide wheel is a stationary ring in the form of wheel. It surrounds the outer periphery of the runner and is fixed to inner surface of casing.

The portion between outer and inner ring of guide wheel consists of a series of guide vanes of aerofoil section. Guide vanes are also called as wicket gates. These vanes form number of passages between the casing and the runner blades. These vanes can be rotated about their own axis even though they are fixed in position.

The function of guide vanes is to direct the water from casing to moving vanes of runner at inlet without shock in order to achieve shock-less and smooth entry to runner.
