- Published on 26 Feb 16

a. Rajiv Kumar
b. Ajay Kumar
c. Shanta Kumar
d. None of the above

ANSWER: Shanta Kumar

The Committee on Public Enterprises under the chairmanship of Shanta Kumar has raised import duty on aluminium to protect domestic firms and also rapped state run aluminium companies for failing to attain capacity utilisation programs. Serious concerns that import duties on aluminium and scrap have adverse effect on PSU profits have prompted this recommendation. According to the Mines Secretary out of total aluminium consumption in the country, 55 percent is met from aluminium scrap and 45 percent through aluminium, on which the import duties are 2.5 percent and 5 per cent respectively, resulting in cheap imports from countries such as China.
