    - National Physics Laboratory designed NPL flatness interferometer to check flatness of the surfaces.

    - Monochromatic green light if focused on a pin hole. It gives intense point source of monochromatic light on the focal plane of collimating lens. Fringes are produced when an optical flat is placed below the collimating lens.

    - In the fringe pattern of gauge, having taper along its short corner has same pitch in the fringe pattern but are in different direction.

    - A perfect and flat gauge is indicating by a fringe pattern having two sets of same pitch and same direction.
