Depending on the functional capabilities, voltage regulators are generally classified into linear regulators and switching regulators. Linear voltage regulators are the simplest form of voltage regulators in which power dissipation is upto the greater extent especially in series pass transistor.

On the contrary, the series pass transistor behaves as a switch in switching voltage regulator. In addition to this, it also exhibits lower level of power dissipation.

Among the category of linear voltage regulators, the fixed voltage regulator delivers fixed output voltage and also can be programmed as per the required level.
