Behera’s appointment as state police chief was confirmed by the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government after the cabinet meeting.

In May 2017, TP Senkumar was reinstated as DGP of Kerala after an 11-month legal battle, when the Supreme Court directed the Vijayan government to post him back as chief.
