    - Base tangent method is used to check tooth thickness. In this method David Brown tangent comparator is used to measure base pitch of gears.

    - This tangent comparator is used to measure base length between two parallel planes. These parallel planes are tangential to two opposing tooth flanks in a gear.

    - If the comparator used has back lash allowance then this amount is subtracted from the calculated values of base tangent methods.

    - If this method of measurement is used then only one vernier is involved and if gear tooth vernier is used two verniers are used for measurement.
