    - Root mean square method is used to calculate average ordinate of surface roughness.

    - It is calculated as geometrical average and not as arithmetic average for CLA values.

    - yrms is 11% greater than yCLA for same texture and same length of a surface.

    The formula to calculate average ordinate of surface roughness is:

    y = √(y12 + y22 + y32) / n

    y = √ (Σy12 ) / n
