There are various types of flow lines in a flow field such as streak line or filament line, path line and stream line. The streak line or filament line gives an instantaneous representation of the location of the fluid particles, which have passed through a given point. Path line is the actual path followed by a fluid particle as it moves during a period of time. A path line can intersect itself. Stream line is the imaginary line which is drawn in the fluid in such a way that the tangent to any point gives the direction of motion at that point. In a steady flow, the path line, streak line and stream line remain identical.
