Different types of measuring instruments are used based on design, function and operation. Self contained or remote indicating instruments are used for this purpose. Telemetry is used to monitor space signals of a space craft for locating all controls at one central point. It is an automated communication process in which data collected at remote points is transmitted to receiving equipments for the purpose of monitoring. The counterpart of telemetry is required for the systems that require external instructions and data to operate.
Telemetry is a device used to measure any quantity remotely and consists of a transmission path, sensor, display, recording or control devices.

Voyager 1 (Space probe launched by NASA) covered distance more than 10 billion kilometers. Manned and unmanned spacecrafts use telemetry for data transmission.

Stroboscope is a type of non-contact instrument. It is used to measure speed. Pyrometer is also a non-contact type of instrument and is used to measure temperature.
