Kaplan turbine is reaction type of turbine which has adjustable blades. It is a propeller type water turbine. The Turgo turbine and Girand turbine are the examples of impulse turbine.

The reaction turbines work on the principle of impulse reaction. A part of pressure energy on water is firstly converted into kinetic energy and then is is supplied to turbine.

Kaplan turbine is an inward flow reaction turbine. Flowing water changes its pressure as it moves through the turbine and gives up its energy. As the total pressure energy of the water is not totally converted into kinetic energy, the runner of Kaplan turbine always be under pressure of above atmospheric. For satisfying this condition, it requires the blades of turbine to run in closed passage which are completely filled with water in all conditions.
