- Critical resolved shear stress is the stress required to initiate slip in pure and perfect single crystal.
- Critical resolved shear stress is given as τ
cr
= σ cos α cos β
Here the term cos α cos β is known as Schmid's factor and this equation is called as Schmid's law.
- σ is magnitude of applied stress, β is the angle between slip direction and direction of force applied, α is the angle between direction of force applied and normal slip of plane.
- Critical resolved shear stress is zero, if slip plane is parallel to tensile axis or if slip direction is at right angles to tensile axis.
- Critical resolved shear stress is σ / 2, if both slip plane and slip direction are inclined at 45
o
to tensile axis.
