    - According G.I. Kobayashi, best working environment can be achieved by using five steps known as 5S. These steps are used to reduce waste and increase productivity by maintaining orderly workplace.

    - The 5S are as follows:

    1) Sort: In this step unnecessary items are eliminated by placing a red flag on them. Useless items such as broken tools, obsolete jigs, scrap, etc are eliminated. JIC i.e just in case mentality can be checked by sorting.

    2) Set in order: This step helps in effective storage of items in an organized way.

    3) Shine: This step refers to cleaning of workpiece. Due to clean environment, malfunctioning of equipments such as
leakage, vibrations, etc can be easily identified.

    4) Standardize: According to this step, standards assigned in the organization are to be followed by workers and the duties are to be pre-assigned.

    5) Sustain: This step is difficult to implement and achieve. Frequent check ups, performance reviews or department tours are the tools that can be used to sustain the 5S.
