    - The flatness of a surface is tested by using an optical flat.

    - A fringe pattern is observed if an optical flat is placed on a metal surface, depending upon the nature of the surface in contact.

    - The pitch of bands formed depend upon the angle of wedge and if the angle of wedge increases, pitch of bands increases.

    - The surface is assumed to be concave, if the fringes obtained move towards the centre and when they move away from the centre, the surface is convex.
