    - Different parameters such as roughness, waviness, lay, flaws, actual surface, etc are considered while defining a surface texture.

    A) Flaws

    - Irregularities occurring at one place or at relatively infrequent places are called as flaws. They may also occur at wide intervals on a surface.

    - Flaws include defects such as:
    1) blow holes
    2) cracks
    3) ridges
    4) nicks

    B) Actual surface is the surface prescribed by the designer. It can also be the surface prescribed by the process of manufacture.

C)Nominal surface - Surface prescribed by an average number of irregularities which are super imposed on it. This type of theoretical or geometrically perfect surface does not exist.

    D) Waviness

    1) Wide spaced undulation of surface texture is called as waviness. Waviness is wider than roughness width cut off and includes irregularities of first and second order.

    2) It is measured in terms of waviness height and waviness width.

    3) This irregularity is caused due to machines, heat treatment, wrapping etc.

    E) Roughness

    1) This irregularity is caused due to manufacturing processes. Roughness includes third and fourth order irregularities.

    2) They are micro geometrical errors.
