A temperature change of about 10o C is necessary to initiate change of phase. Martensite phase is soft and can be deformed easily. They exist at low temperatures. Austenite is a strong phase of shape memory alloys occurring at high temperatures.

When the temperature of shape memory alloys is cooled to low temperature, martensite phase is composed and can be easily deformed. When this phase is heated to a certain temperature deformed martensite transforms into austenite phase.

Therefore, heating transforms deformed martensite into austenite phase.
