Compression test is a type of destructive testing. This test is used to determine behavior of metals under compressive load. Visual testing, ultrasonic testing, eddy current testing are types of non-destructive testing.

Visual testing includes inspection by eyesight and also uses low magnifying lens, boroscopes, etc. This sort of inspection is carried by skilled persons. Pipe, screw holes, hydraulics, engine mounts, etc can be inspected by this method.

Eddy current test is used for sorting materials, checking dimensions. The magnitude of induced eddy current depends upon shape and size of specimen, hardness, micro-structure, amount and types of defects. This test requires high accuracy in calibration. Semiskilled persons are required to handle the test instrument. This test is used to evaluate irregularly shaped objects, rounded, flat objects. This test also detects conductivity, discontinuities, heat treatment etc.
