Coupling: It is the mechanical element which connects two shafts of a transmission system. Coupling reduces vibrations and shocks.

    Different types of couplings are:

    1) Rigid couplings: These couplings are used to connect perfectly aligned shafts. These couplings cannot absorb shocks. Different types of rigid couplings include:

    a) Muff or sleeve coupling: These couplings are used for line shafts.
    b) Clamp coupling: These couplings are used for line shafts.
    c) Rigid flange coupling: These couplings are used for connecting electric motor to compressor.

    2) Flexible couplings: These couplings are used to connect shafts which have lateral or angular misalignment. These couplings absorb shocks and vibrations. Types of flexible couplings are as follows:

    a) Oldham coupling: These couplings are used for connecting eccentric shafts
    b) Universal coupling: These couplings are used to connect gear box and differential
    c) Bushed pin type flexible coupling: These couplings are used for connecting diesel engine and generator.
