Ceramic materials are made of different compositions and have wide range of neutron capture and scatter characteristics. Thus they find nuclear applications and are used as moderators and shielding, controllers and fuel elements. These materials are refractory chemical resistant.

Urania and Plutonia are widely used as ceramic oxide fuels. Retention of fission products is possible due to open crystal structure of oxide nuclear ceramics. These materials have excellent resistance to radiation damage.
