In impulse turbine, the high velocity jet strikes the buckets on the runner. It changes the direction of flow of high velocity fluid. The resulting impulse spins the turbine and leaves the fluid flow with reduced kinetic energy.

There is no pressure change of water in impulse turbine. Therefore, the pressure of water is atmospheric and remains constant while passing over the runner in impulse turbine.

The fluid pressure head is changed to velocity head by throwing of fluid with nozzle. The transfer of energy for impulse turbine is described by Newton's second law of motion.
