A dam is constructed across a river to store water. Its potential energy is utilized to rotate the turbine which is connected to dam through penstock.
The top surface of water in the dam is called as head race and the level of water canal into which water is discharged from turbine is called as tail race.
Difference between the head race and the tail race is called as gross head. Gross head includes net head available at turbien and frictional losses in penstock.
