    - Trend pattern occurs due to tool wear, dirt accumulation, atmospheric effects like temperature and humidity. Shift is caused due to change in inspection method. The behavior of the process can be understood by the pattern of plots.

    - Downward trend indicates initial improvement of process.

    - Upward trend indicates wear of parts or slackening of control.

    - Pattern showing trends are patterns for assignable causes.
