It was created in 1987 by Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr Norman Borlaug. The prize was first funded by General Foods. Since 1990, the World Food Prize has been sponsored by the businessman John Ruan. First award was given to M. S. Swaminathan for introducing high-yielding wheat and rice varieties to India starting India's Green Revolution in 1987. Dr Verghese Kurien was also recipient of the award in 1989.Sir Fazle Hasan Abed wins 2015 World Food prize for reducing poverty. He is Founder of the largest non-governmental organization in the world receives award for unparalleled work in Bangladesh and 10 other countries. Abed established Brac - formerly known as the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee - in 1972 as a relief operation to help the country recover from its war of independence with Pakistan and the destruction wrought by a tropical cyclone. The organization's focus soon switched to finding new ways to tackle poverty and empower women socially and economically, and it is estimated to have brought nearly 150 million people out of poverty since its foundation.
