The expression is:

(0.8)
2
+(0.4)
2
(0.8)
4
-(0.4)
4
?

?? Shortcut (No long calculation)

Recognize the identity:

a
4
-b
4
=(a
2
-b
2
)(a
2
+b
2
)

So,

a
2
+b
2
a
4
-b
4
?

=a
2
-b
2

Here,

a=0.8
b=0.4

Therefore,

=0.8
2
-0.4
2

Now,

0.8
2
=0.64,0.4
2
=0.16
0.64-0.16=0.48

? Answer: 0.48

Explanation

Question: (0.8)^4 – (0.4)^4 / (0.8)^2 + (0.4)^2

Answer: (0.8*0.8*0.8*0.8)-(0.4*0.4*0.4*0.4) / (0.8*0.8) + (0.4*0.4)
You can now cancel 0.8*0.8 in the numerator with the 0.8*0.8 in the denominator, in the same way, do for 0.4 ,
Therefore we get,
=(0.8*0.8)-(0.4*0.4)
=0.64-0.16
=0.48
