Academic qualifications to be an aeronautical engineer

I have just passed 12th and want to know which all subjects I should be opting for in my college to prepare for a career in aeronautical engineering. And what all do I need to do become an aeronautical engineer?

It is advisable to take up as many courses as possible in science and mathematics, along with the courses in English and communications if you want to have a better understanding of what aeronautical engineering is all about. It is of high importance that an aeronautical engineer knows how to apply physics and at the same time knows how to solve mathematical problems. They should be good in communication as to communicate various complex ideas or plans accurately and clearly to other important people.

To become an aerospace engineer, you need to have atleast a BA/BS, MS or PHD diploma or degree. It is recommended to students to do have the above qualification as to get more of an advantage when looking or applying for a job in the field of aeronautics. Engineers should not stop studying throughout their careers as various new things keep happening and it is
important to be up to date on current techniques, new materials, new processes, etc to give them more knowledge. In addition to all these, many states many require an aeronautical engineer to have a state license, which may include a written test.

What are the academic qualifications for aeronautical engineering?

There are many colleges including IIT’s which offer courses this field. Admissions for its BTECH programmes are done through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) which is conducted on an all India level. Another way of doing Aeronautical engineering is to do a graduation in any of the streams like civil, mechanical, computer, electronics, chemical and other branches and then applying for aeronautical engineering at master’s level. Students going for degree courses should undergo an entrance test – GATE. IISC also offer multiple kinds of opportunities for higher studies to the graduates.

Courses offered for MTECH are Aerodynamics, propulsion, structures and guidance and control which are related to aeronautical engineering. Students appearing for SAT and TOEFL at an undergraduate level are eligible to apply for universities abroad. For students at graduate level, GRE and TOEFL are the exams they need to clear to apply for good universities outside India. However, from a career perspective, a PHD is a must.
