Air Power: Suzlon Constructs The World's Tallest Hyrbid Wind Generator in Kutch

Suzlon has installed the tallest hybrid wind generator turbine in Kutch, Gujarat. The biggest wind turbine manufacturer in the world, Suzlon Energy achieved yet another record following the installation on November 6th, 2014. The turbine will now generate 12 to 15 percent more energy. This turbine is 120 metres in height. It is taller than even the conventional wind turbine towers by around 40 metres. This new turbine has increased the total installed wind energy capacity of the Kutch region of Gujarat to 1100 MW. Suzlon Energy has achieved yet another milestone following this installation as it is the largest wind energy park in Asia at one location.

This tower is perfect for low wind areas and the potential for energy generation is massive. Within the next three years, the Kutch region will possess 2000 MW of wind energy capacity. This is way more than the other regions. Considering that Gujarat has had a headstart in the clean energy movement, it's time for the other states to catch up. In the year 2008, Suzlon Energy had signed an MoU with the Government of Gujarat for the development of 2000 MW of wind energy capacity in this state. The wind energy capacity in this state has grown by leaps and bounds following this installation.

The 120 metre hybrid turbine was inaugurated by the CM of Gujarat, Anandiben Patel. The turbine has been designed by local engineers and also developed by them. Tulsi Tanti, the Chairman and MD of Suzlon has said this installation has made it to the records for being the biggest wind energy park in Asia.

“This tower is ideal for low wind areas, and the potential is huge. In the next three years, this region will have 2,000 MW of wind energy capacity, and this will make it the world’s biggest wind energy park in one location. Six years ago, we had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Gujarat Government to set up 2,000 MW capacity here. Out of that, we have now crossed 1,100 MW,” Mr. Tanti was quoted as having said.

India has the potential to generate more wind energy. India had a potential of 1 lakh MW of wind energy but with the breakthrough, the capacity has increased to 2 lakh MW. “This potential from the hybrid 120-metre turbine is 50,000 MW as now we can go to low-wind side,” he said. Suzlon Energy has established a total of 25,000 MW of wind energy capacity for its clients in many countries including India to date.
