Appointment of Mallikarjuna Kharge as LOP – A right decision by Congress?

It seems Congress likes to take the steps that are not obvious. It keeps on shocking the entire country by its decision. The latest controversy is coming in the form of appointment of FMR railway minister Mallikarjuna Kharge as the leader of Congress in Lok Sabha. The people and the other parties expected Rahul Gandhi to come ahead and take the charge. However, it is not the case. Did UPA made a right decision by appointing Mallikarjuna Kharge as LOP?

Yes

• Kharge is one of the most capable leaders of Congress who understands the dynamics of politics and is well versed with the entire procedure of legislation and administration.

• He has got a clean public image that can help the Congress to cover up its old misdeeds in the UPA 2 tenure.

• He is the man who has won the Assembly elections for 9 consecutive times and undoubtedly has the skills to perform better in the new role.

• Rahul Gandhi has failed as vice president of party and as prime ministerial candidate. So it was best for the party to appoint Kharge instead of Rahul Gandhi as face of opposition leader in the Lok Sabha.

• A democratic government needs a strong opposition that can be led by Mallikarjuna Kharge as he has the experience as well as the knowledge to bind the party together.

No

• Appointment of Mallikarjuna Kharge highlights the weakness of Rahul Gandhi who is running away from taking the responsibilities.

• By shunning away the responsibilities, Rahul Gandhi has proved that he has agreed to fall under the category of leader Emeritus at a younger age of 44 years. It is accepting the defeat.

• Instead of selecting Mallikarjuna Kharge, Congress should have opted for a younger leader to represent the opposition in the Lok Sabha.

• Jyotiraditya Scindia was one of the best deserving candidates from the Congress who had the charisma and charm to connect with the people. He is well versed in Hindi and English, and could have been a better choice to match the skills of Modi in Lok Sabha.

• Congress has ignored the importance of the power of Parliament by not assigning the leadership to the deserving candidate. Parliament is equally important like actual elections.

Conclusion

The choice of Mallikarjuna Kharge can be seen under two perceptions. If his candidature is compared with Rahul Gandhi, he is undoubtedly a better choice. But talking about the other deserving candidates present in the Congress, it seems Congress has again committed a mistake. It seems they are on the mission of self-destruction. The message seems clear; Rahul Gandhi just wants the power without responsibility.

  • It is just not a fair game on the part of Congress to change the leader at the time of taking charge for the opposition. If at all Congress felt Rahul Gandhi incapable of leading in the front, then they should have taken this step right at the time of him being the Vice President or at the time of his contesting elections as the PM candidature.

There is nothing wrong with Mallikarjuna Kharge taking the charge, as he is good enough to be the leader of opposition. It is need of the hour to have a strong opposition in our country, and Congress being the only big opposition right now, we need them to be strong enough to give a bold step for any concern.

But Congress being in a state of dilemma confirms their weakness in every aspect. A leader is the person who not only holds the party, but also leads the members from the front. He should take the responsibility of the party, instead of the sheepish move by hiding behind the screens at the time of need.

Rahul Gandhi has failed as a leader much prior to his taking stand as the PM candidate that should have been the time for the Congress to take a firm decision regarding their leader. It is mere cowardness on the part of Rahul Gandhi t move back at the time of taking responsibility for his failure. It is the most incorrect decision to bring such a big leader ahead at the time to face someone else’s failure.
