    Chartered Accountancy is a professional course in accounting for those candidates who want to make their career in accounting field. Every country has their own Accountancy Association which regulates the quality and quantity of professionals in this field. ICAI - The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India is both an examining and a licensing body in India. This institute is responsible for conducting the Chartered Accountancy Course. This course comprise of three levels: Common Proficiency Test (CPT), Integrated Professional Competence Course and Final Course. It is a blend of theory and practical training which equips a candidate with adequate knowledge, ability, skills and other qualities required for the chartered accountant. A CA is someone who is specialized in accounting, taxation and auditing and is accepted as a member of the ICAI after passing the Final examination of Chartered Accountancy course.

    With the liberalization of the economy a rapid growth has been witnessed in the capital and money markets in India which has increased many career opportunities in the field of accounts and finance but the most prestigious career option gaining popularity is of Chartered Accountant. Chartered accountant is a one of the most challenging and rewarding career not only in India but also outside the country. As country’s policies and approach are becoming liberal opportunities for the Chartered accountants are expected to grow in future. All the companies registered under the companies act are required to appoint a CA to audit the accounts of the company. Recently, many multinational companies are also coming forward in the field Chartered Accountancy.

    Chartered Accountants have wide scope in India. They can join the Government Sector, Private Sector, Public Sector undertakings, Capital markets, business houses and industry etc. They are employed by many companies as Finance Managers, Financial Controllers, Financial Advisors, and Director Finance, Chief Executive, directors, arbitrators, executors, Head of the Department etc. They mainly work on Accountancy, Cost Accountancy, Auditing, Taxation, Consultancy, Investigation, Market Research, Budget Planning etc.

    Qualification required

    - A candidate after passing (10+2) Senior Secondary Examination can enroll for the CPT of the CA programme. A student who has passed the 10th examination can also register with CPT but can write the exam only after passing 10+2 examination or waiting for the results. There is no restriction relating to the age of the candidate or marks secured in HSC.
    - Commerce graduate with 50% marks, non commerce graduate with subjects other than mathematics with an aggregate of 55% marks and non commerce graduates with Maths with an aggregate of 60% marks are permitted to register directly for the Integrated Professional Competence Course (IPCC).
    - Candidates passing the final examination conducted by the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India or the Institute of Company Secretaries of India can register directly for Professional Competency Course.
    - After passing Integrated Professional Competence Course, the candidates can register as Articled clerks for practical training of 100 hours which is mandatory for every candidate pursuing the course. And also take the admission to the Final course.
    - Every graduate above 18 years of age is eligible to register as articles clerk/audit clerks for Chartered Accountancy.

    Entrance exams

    Following are the exams conducted by ICAI
    - Common Professional Test (CPT) earlier known as Professional Education (I) is the entry level examination for the students of Class 10th,
    - Integrated Professional Competence Course (IPCC) for graduates or candidates with higher degrees,
    - Final Exam

    Exams are conducted twice in a year in the month of June and December.
