Eligibility criteria and selection process to be a mechanical engineer.

I want to become a mechanical engineer, could you please tell me the eligibility criteria and the selection procedure for the same?

To be a qualified mechanical engineer one should have a graduate degree (B.E. / B.Tech) or Post graduate degree (M.E) or atleast a diploma in mechanical engineering. The basic eligibility criterion for a B.E. / B.Tech is XII pass or equivalent examination, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After getting a bachelor’s degree one can do post-graduation for a reputed college/institute. It is important to do post-graduation as the courses involved during post-graduation, offers specialised training in thermal engineering, design and production engineering. The Associate Membership Examination of the Institute of Engineers (AMIE), is an institute that enables working people in the private and the public sector, or diploma holders to acquire a Bachelor’s engineering degree through distance education. There is also a three year BEng degree course entitled Mechanical Engineering is also available. This course is also recognised with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for Chartered Engineer status.

Selection to the graduate courses (B.E. / B.Tech) is purely merit based i.e. on the marks scored in the final examination of XII and through entrance exams. Scores in entrance exams are given more value as compared to the marks secured in XII. If you want to get into IIT’s then the entrance exam that you have to give is JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) whereas for other major institutes in India, AIEEE (All India Engineering/Pharmacy/Architecture Entrance Examination) is the entrance exam that you need to give. There are separate entrance exams, other state level and national level exams for prestigious colleges such as BITS Pilani, Rajasthan conducts their own entrance exam.
