What are the eligibility criterion and personal qualities that I should have to be a mining engineer?


There are few mandatory criteria that you should follow to enter this field. A degree in mining (B.E./B.Tech) and a certificated from The Director General of Mines and Safety, Dhanbad, is a must to be in this particular field. There are numerous engineering colleges in India that offer undergraduate as well as post-graduate level courses in the field of mining engineering. The minimum requirement for an under graduate program is 10+2 in science stream and minimum eligibility for the post-graduate program is a Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering. There are various aspects that are included in an academic programme of mining engineering like metallurgy and geology, planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of mines, their safety and excavating and transport of minerals.

If we talk about the personal attributes that an individual must have to make a mark in this field or while entering this field. The main requisites that you are required to have, if you want to make a career in this field are basically the ability to think analytically, should have a capacity to look for tiniest of details, and the ability to work as a part of a team. Good communication skills are also important in this field as it requires a lot of talking and explanation. Mining engineering as a career combines several areas of expertise as it is a very complex and complicated field. In addition to specialist mining knowledge and engineering expertise, a mining engineer must have strong management skills, convincing skills and a sound understanding of financial and business principles.
