Explain Biotechnology and Red Biotechnology.

What is Biotechnology?

- Biotechnology is a technology based on biology which refers to manipulating the biological systems to produce useful products. These systems could be living cells or cell components.

The technologies developed and used by biotechnologists aim at improving the quality of life and health of all living beings. Biotechnology has played a key role in changing the lives for millions by:

- Inventing ways to improve the crop yield and hence feed the hungry,

- Generating alternate medium for the production of energy

- Developing safer, cleaner and more efficient industrial manufacturing processes.

What is Red Biotechnology?

Red biotechnology is a branch of biotechnology which deals with human health care and methods of treatment with the development of medicines like antibiotics. The researchers here conduct tests by manipulating genes through germ line engineering at the embryonic stage or gene therapy in adult patients. It focuses mainly on the pharmaceutical sector.

These days Red Biotechnology is a very extensive field with scientific research, spanning the range of development for genetic engineering, medical drugs and implants, and the cultivation of cells, tissues, and organs for research and treatment of disease or injury.

Blue biotechnology is associated with marine environment, while green biotechnology is associated with agricultural applications.
