How can one get into the nursing profession? What are the levels of courses available?


To enter into the course of General nursing and midwifery, aspirant who have cleared intermediate or class 12th with any of the science or arts stream are eligible. These courses are conducted in school of nursing. The course is of three and a half year duration including six months internship.
Another course to opt for is Bachelor of nursing course (BSc Nursing). The eligibility for entering into this course is passing senior secondary with Physics, Biology and Chemistry. The course completes in 4 years.

For the aspirants who have cleared 10th standard and want to take up nursing as profession, they can go for the course of Auxiliary Nurse Midwife / Health Worker (ANM). ANM’s mostly work in the rural areas working for the health related issues of children, maternal health and old people. Duration of these courses is 18 months.
For higher level of studies, nurses can enter for the degree of Master of Nursing, MSc (Nursing). For entrance in MSc (Nursing), the aspirant should have obtained degree of BSc (Nursing) and should have minimum one year experience in hospital or education institute or in community health center.

Several institutes also provide MPhil course in Nursing of one year duration. Candidates can also accomplish Doctorate of Philosophy in Nursing, which can be completed in 3 years.
